THE HOUSE of Representatives ethics committee has given Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon D. Alvarez 10 days to answer a complaint for disorderly conduct after he urged the military to withdraw its support for the President.
“The allegations are very serious,” Party-list Rep. Raul Angelo D. Bongalon told a news briefing on Monday. “The committee has given him 10 days… to answer the complaint filed by Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy.”
Mr. Alvarez last month urged the Armed Forces to withdraw its support for Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. to deescalate tensions with China, which some lawmakers said was seditious.
“During our initial consideration, we found that the Uy complaint was sufficient both in form and in content,” said Mr. Bongalon, who is one of the vice-chairmen of the committee.
He said Mr. Alvarez’s remarks at a political rally in Tagum City last month were “dangerous, libelous, and seditious.” — Kenneth Christiane L. Basilio
